Weekly Homework Schedule
The purpose of homework is to prepare, extend, study and practice in order to promote high quality student learning.
o Preparation assignments preview or gather background information before concepts appear in class.
o Extensions assignments emphasize applications of knowledge gained in class and/or creativity, as well as individual needs and interests.
o Study assignments prepare students for test or require completion of independent reading.
o Practice assignments reinforce skills and concepts taught in class.
As with all the instruction your child will receive here at Jamaica Elementary School, homework will be differentiated. That means that homework will be given according to your child’s learning level. Every week the following items need to be practiced, read, or studied to prepare your child for Friday’s test.
1. 20-30 minutes of reading EVERY day. Your child should be reading books that are at their reading level. This will include: library books, decodable books sent home by the teacher or books that you have at home.
2. Spelling words need to be studied EVERY day. Here are some ways that you can help your child study them:
a. Write them three times each
b. Write them in the sand or in shaving cream for fun
c. Spell them out loud and use them in a sentence
d. Write them in sentences
e. Use colored markers or crayons to trace them
3. Practice reading your weekly words, daily
4. Practice math flashcards as they come home
5. Some students will be given Accelerated math. This is math skills for students that need to be challenged
6. Check for word lists that may need to read
7. Check the green folder daily for anything extra that needs practice
*** Remember… Parents’ interest and involvement DOES make a difference!
TOGETHER we can get your child off to a great start in school!
